Has Diabetes impacted the vision of anyone in your family or friends?

Did you know that Diabetes is a silent enemy and over 90 percent of severe vision loss and blindness are caused by diabetic retinopathy. This can be identified and addressed early on through a comprehensive eye exam from an eye doctor. A common symptom of diabetes is vision loss, which can sometimes help in the diagnosis of the disease. Diabetes can be caused by family heritage, age, ethnicity, obesity, habits and  lifestyles.

A study commissioned by Transitions Optical found that both the incidence and prevalence of diabetes are higher in certain ethnic groups, such as African Americans and Hispanics, as compared to the general population.   Prevalence of diabetic retinopathy is 70 percent higher in African Americans versus Caucasians and 1 in 10 Hispanics has diabetes, which is 3 times the rate of the general population.  It is important to consider eye health as part of overall health and wellness.

Transitions’ children’s websites (http://www.eyedidntknowthat.info/   also provides a lot of information about eye healthcare, including quizzes to educate children and families about eye care.  The website is very informative for the entire family.  I like the website because they make the topic of learning fun.  According to Transitions Optical, one in four children have an undiagnosed vision problem that can interfere with the ability to read and learn. Clearly, healthy sight is imperative for children to make the most of their education.  Educating children about proper eye care, such as regular eye exams and proper eyewear, can help to prevent the development of common vision problems.

Here is an example of a fun quiz on the Transitions Children’s site:
